What is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar Yoga is the most widely practised form of yoga in the West – it has a strong emphasis upon alignment of body, mind and spirit through practice of asanas (poses) and pranayama (observance and control of the breath). Find details upon BKS Iyengar who devised this type of yoga here.

It is accessible to all ages and all levels of fitness, promoting mental and physical wellness. It helps to strengthen the body and mind, promoting mental resilience, enhancing our ability to deal with stress.

We use equipment such as blocks, bricks, belts and chairs to help develop strength, flexibility, balance and stability.

Asanas are introduced and taught progressively. Beginning with standing and supine asanas, progressing onto seated asanas, forward extensions, lateral extensions, inversions, backward extensions and abdominal asanas.

The sequence taught in each class is carefully devised, allowing students to develop awareness of every area of the body.

Yoga can benefit us in many ways, bringing us vitality, flexibility, mental and physical strength, focus and a mental calm.

All Iyengar Yoga teachers have undergone a period of training for at least 2 years and have been assessed by examiners to achieve their teaching certificate. There are many different levels of certification and your teacher will teach only asanas and pranayama that they have been assessed upon. Further detail upon this can be found here.
